The 26 Marshals
of the Empire
A few remarks :
The title of "maréchal" was not the highest rank in the military hierarchy,
but a purely civilian dignity giving a rank at the imperial court.
Napoleon himself has always
been clear about this, but it's not sure the marshals understood it that way.

The number of Maréchaux has always been limited to 16, as stated by the
sénatus-consulte of 28 floréal An XII (20 May 1804)
1805-1807 : 14
1807: + 1 = 15
1809 : 15 - 3 (Berthier -> Neuchâtel, Murat-> Neaples, Joudan-> Chief of
Staff in the Spanish Army) =12 (this is confirmed by the Almanach impérial) - 1
(Lannes) + 3 = 14
1811 : 14 - 1 (Bernadotte -> Sweden) = 13
1812 : 13 + 1 (Suchet) + 1 (Jourdan = back) = 15
1813 : 15 + 1 (Gouvion) = 16
1814 : 16 - 1 Bessières + 1 (Poniatowski) - 1 (Poniatowski) = 15
1815 : 15 - 4 struck off the list (Berthier, Augereau, Marmont, Pérignon,
Victor) + 1 Grouchy = 12.
